President approves disaster declaration request for historic flooding.

President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration request for public assistance for the historic flooding and landslides that plagued parts of Hawaii in April, Gov. David Ige announced on Tuesday.

The approval would provide federal funding for emergency repair work for flood-ravaged areas of Oahu and Kauai.

“I want to thank our FEMA partners for their on-the-ground assistance and rapid response to this request,” Ige said, in a statement. “I have spoken with mayors Caldwell and Carvalho to let them know help is on the way.”

Ige submitted the request on May 2. The request for individual assistance is still under review.

Some 532 homes were damaged or destroyed in the historic rains that swamped Oahu and Kauai between April 13 and 16, state officials said.
